Pastor’s Statement Regarding CDC Masking Recommendations

Friday, July 30, 2021

In March 2020, when the pandemic began, our church council met to decide our course of action in regards to Covid 19. At that time, it was decided that we would follow all CDC guidelines and recommendations from the Illinois Great Rivers Conference and the Bishop. It is my understanding that the IGRC and the office of the Bishop have decided that they will no longer issue directives for local churches.

This week the CDC has issued a new recommendation for masks especially for substantial and high impact areas. The organization is recommending masks be worn indoors for all people, regardless of vaccination status. Therefore, starting this Sunday, August 1, we will require all people attending in person worship services at Neoga Grace UMC, Toledo UMC, and Etna UMC to wear a mask. At this time, we will NOT be changing our seating arrangements or congregational singing.

All of our churches are located in Cumberland County which is in the moderate category currently. However, we are surrounded by counties that are substantial and high impact areas that are seeing a significant increase in Covid 19 and Delta variant cases. Cumberland County area has also seen cases double in the last week, per healthcare workers and public health officials, which suggests an upward trend that will most likely place us in the substantial category in the next few weeks. There is a map attached from the CDC that shows the various impact areas for the entire state.

I realize that this seems like we are taking a step back, but we have always put the health and safety of all people as a top priority. We desire to show the love of God to all people and this is a simple way to do this. In the event that you are unable to wear a mask, I encourage you to join us online. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me and I will answer as quickly as possible.

Peace in Christ,
Pastor Rob
